In Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, Jesus answered His disciples’ question “What shall be the sign of thy coming?” with a list of unmistakable trends: wars and rumors of wars, famines, earthquakes in various places, false christs and false prophets deceiving many, persecution of believers, iniquity abounding and love growing cold, and the gospel being “preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations” before the end comes (Matthew 24:14). He also pointed to signs in nature — “signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars” (Luke 21:25) — and to a general climate of moral and social breakdown “as it was in the days of Noah” (Matthew 24:37-39), marked by people absorbed in ordinary life and unprepared. No single sign proves the end is at hand, but Jesus said that when we see them multiplying together, “know that it is near, even at the doors” (Matthew 24:33).
